Ebook About Fantasy’s most anticipated debut of the year. There was a time when the Red Gods ruled the land. The Dark Lady and her horde dealt in death and blood and fire. That time has long since passed and the neighbouring kingdoms of Mireces and Rilpor hold an uneasy truce. The only blood spilled is confined to the border where vigilantes known as Wolves protect their kin and territory at any cost. But after the death of his wife, King Rastoth is plagued by grief, leaving the kingdom of Rilpor vulnerable.Vulnerable to the blood-thirsty greed of the Warrior-King Liris and the Mireces army waiting in the mountains…GODBLIND is an incredible debut from a dazzling new voice of the genre.Book Godblind (The Godblind Trilogy, Book 1) Review :
Been looking at this trilogy for awhile. Years, in fact.Although I love my Kindle, I prefer holding my books to read. And finding a used God blind cheaper than the downloaded version - I decided to finally give it a go.After 4 days, I literally just finished the novel. Hmmm, my thoughts on it?Overall, for a debut novel, Anna Stephens gave me a solid read. Never dull or boring, along with short chapters, Godblind sent me into one of my all-time favorite genres - Dark Fantasy. The pros: Stephens writing is visceral and character driven. World-building was meh. Typical medieval setting. Nothing unfortunately new here. No demons or monsters or fantasy tropes like elfs, centaurs, etc...And horses. I love horses, but why can't authors develop something fresh and new for humans to ride? So few fantasy authors do this. Shame.Character development was good, but for pretty barbarous type people, they came off as talking and acting like they were my neighbors. No, no, no...I usually hate heavy political intrigue in my fantasy. But Anna Stephens doesn't get carried away, and some of her best writing is in those scenes. Big reveals and surprises in those scenes were deftly done, and didn't beat me over the head with it.Action sequences were a mixed bag. For an author who says she holds a 4th Dan black belt - why in the neck didn't she utilize this knowledge in this bloody book?!The action sequences were sometimes hard to picture and awkward. Other times they were better. Read better. Definitely read worse. The use of gay people doesn't bother me. But there was ABSOLUTELY no reason to turn one of the main characters into a gay man in just a few chapters. No need to do this. It came off as forced, and wasn't believable at all. Added nothing to the story. Not only was it not needed, but felt like the author shoe horned this in, because it's now all the rave to throw in gay characters in out books, movies, and TV shows.I wish this author would have channeled her writing in creating new types of mounts to ride than typical horses, or fantasy creatures filling her forests and mountains of her world, instead of wasting it on changing a heterosexual character into a homosexual in just a few chapters.Overall, despite the various issues, Anna Stephens gave me an interesting, fast-paced novel. Very, very good for a 1st book. But whether it left me wanting to read the next two books....I dunno.Time will tell. Godblind is the first book in the Godblind series and it is not for the faint of heart! What first grabbed my attention with this book was the cover, I thought it was quite interesting. The synopsis piqued my interest as well, I mean who wouldn’t be interested when promised rituals, sacrifices, and bloodthirsty gods?! Call me curious! Well, this book delivered much in the way of rituals, sacrifices, and sheer brutality! Seriously, if it can cause a trigger, it is in this book and it will be in full graphic bloody detail. The Red Gods are indeed blood thirsty and their sacrifices are the worse kind of torture, it was quite unsettling to read. There is much in the way of politics and god/goddess worship in this book, which would appeal to many readers. I am not usually a huge fan of stories with main conflicts surrounding a belief system but I found myself drawn into the machinations involved in this book. What really drew me in were the four main characters who played a role in realizing that there was indeed a threat looming and then taking steps to try and get the word out before it was too late to hold back an invasion. I mentioned four main characters but there were about ten different points of view in this book and that did take away from really developing a true connection with any one character. In addition to a huge cast, the chapters were very short. I cannot say that it was a huge turnoff but I did feel like they ended too soon in some cases. I kept waiting for that character’s story to continue and I felt like I pushed through the chapters in between at a rather fast clip in order to continue with certain characters. I would prefer a smaller cast with longer chapters that included more description. I also would prefer that next time there be less predictability of what was going to occur. There was plenty of brutality in this story because the Red Gods were those that required blood and sacrifice but a lot of the plot felt like it followed a grimdark formula and that the author used only violence to create the “dark” that we find in that genre. Despite my issues, which really were minor, I did enjoy Godblind and I am looking forward to the continuation of this story.
